Here’s a discussion of my selections for the ROYGBIV mix, Volume 15 of the Green Monkey Music Project.

Silver – Echo and the Bunnymen
The first song off their wonderful album Ocean Rain.

I’m So Green – Can
A great little track from those funky Krautrockers. From the delightful album Ege Bamyasi.

L’il Red Riding Hood – Sam the Sam and the Pharaohs
For me, this song beats their other hit “Wooly Bully” hands down. This one has got a little playful menace to it. I love it. And Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs is one of my all-time favorite rock band names.

Moog Indigo – Jean Jacques Perrey
The wacky title track from an album by Frenchman Jean Jacques Perrey. I played his two albums with Gershon Kingsley incessantly for a couple months (it didn’t hurt that my kids loved it). For those who don’t know, the song’s name is a play on the Duke Ellington song “Mood Indigo”. However, to my disappointment, I learned a few years ago that the “O” sound in Moog is pronounced like “Go” rather than “Goo”. Why am I explaining this to you?

Azure – Ken Nordine
A song off Colors, a whole freaking album devoted to mauve, russet and chartreuse by Word Jazz freakazoid Ken Nordine.

Pink Moon – Nick Drake
You might recognize this song from a Volkswagen commercial from a few years back. It was actually my first exposure to this song, and my first exposure to Nick Drake. It still bothers me that it was an advertisement that introduced me to the music. I’m not sure if it’s because I want to be a know-it-all hipster (oh, dear Lord, I’m not), or what. I just hate corporations, mostly.

All Blues – Miles Davis
Most of my songs in this mix are very short, so I don’t feel too bad about including this long piece from Kind of Blue. I first heard this in the Clint Eastwood movie In The Line Of Fire, which doesn’t bother me at all. So, I guess for me, exposure to music from movies, OK; exposure to music from ads, bad.

It’s time for another Green Monkey mix – ROYGBIV. This one is going to be centered around colors. I had originally wanted to call the mix “Colours”, but that would garner me crap from all you Americanskis. And “Colors” would of course offend everyone else.

Anywho, the rules:

1. 8 participants — including me, so that’s seven open slots.

2. Each person gets up to seven songs. If you have a problem coming up with seven, that’s fine, but you have to provide at least five.

3. The song title of each of your selections has to contain a color.

4. You can’t duplicate color names in your selections. If I pick a song with “red” and you pick a song with “red”, that’s fine, just don’t pick two of your own songs that have the word “red” in it.

The best song off their later album The Days Of Our Nights. If you can resist singing the chorus “Remember, remember…” out loud when you hear it, you’re a stronger person than I.

Every 1’s A Winner – Hot Chocolate
MizSplotchy introduced me to this band when we first started dating. She had a 70’s music compilation that had the wonderful “You Sexy Thing” on it. If you’re not familiar with them, they are a great, funky band worth checking out.

From A Motel 6 #1 – Yo La Tengo
A nice instrumental track from their two-disc outtakes/rarities collection Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo

106 Beats That – Wire
I dip once again into Wire’s debut album Pink Flag for a short, sweet track.

Expresso 2222 – Gilberto Gil
The title song from a great album. Wonderful, high-energy song.

The Thousandth and Tenth Day Of The Human Totem Pole – Captain Beefheart
The last song off the last album of Captain Beefheart.

There was a gurgling and googling heard
A tenth of the way up the pole.
Approaching was a small child
With Statue of Liberty doll.

So, let’s celebrate music together with Volume 14 of the GMMP series: Numb3r5.

For those intimidated by previous monkey mixes, this one might be a mix for you to try. Of course, the brave-hearted who have participated in the past are also welcome to play.

There is only one rule for this mix, and it is very simple.

All the selections must have a number of some sort in the title. There can be an actual number in the title, or the number can be spelled out (i.e. “Two”). I’ll even allow adjectives like “Seventh”.

For Numb3r5, there will be eight total participants who have six selections to choose. With me in the mix, that leaves seven open slots.

Let’s have some mathematical fun, already! Leave a comment if you want to participate.
