Control Your Temper

Let’s have another one song mix, m’kay?

I know that Bob Marley’s hits collection Legend is owned by virtually every person in the world.

I was freaky crazy about Mr. Marley and his Wailers in high school, and bought up all his records. Among the records I picked up was a piece of vinyl titled “Birth Of A Legend”. The music on this record was a lot closer to ska then reggae — it was from Mr. Marley’s early musical career.

I was instantly smitten by a song called “Simmer Down”. According to Wikipedia, the song was the Wailers’ first single, and was a big hit in Jamaica in 1964. It boggles my mind a bit that this song was around when the Beatles were invading the US.

Anyways, here ya go.

The Wailers – Simmer Down

Enjoy it (or don’t)!

A Hand-Me-Down From God Knows Where

Hey, it’s time for another one song mix!

Have you heard All Tomorrow’s Parties, off the Velvet Underground’s first album?

It’s a nice song, sung by Nico, kind of hard to describe — maybe formal and pounding?

Anyways, I flipped when I recently heard a cover of the VU song by the 1980’s Athens, GA band The Method Actors.

The Method Actors – All Tomorrow’s Parties

I wasn’t aware of The Method Actors when they were actively playing. I actually discovered these guys back when I was downloading a lot of music from newsgroups in the late 90’s.

I had no idea who they were, but I saw that their double-album Little Figures was available for download. I thought to myself, “Hm. Method Actors. That’s kind of a cool name.”

Don’t underestimate the fun of picking up something just because you like the name of the band, or like the album cover, or whatever. I picked up Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation ’cause I thought, “Hm, that’s a nice picture of a candle.”

Anyways, The Method Actors are now one of my favorite bands. Unfortunately, I don’t have all their music. This weekend, I visited their MySpace page and heard this amazing song.

I don’t know, it’s just awesome — awesome and worthy of a one-song mix.

So enjoy it (or don’t)!

I’m So Worried, I Told You I Was Worried

No, no, I’m really not all that worried.

It’s time for another one song mix!

This mix comes from Mayo Thompson’s 1970 album Corky’s Debt To His Father, which was reissued by the Chicago label Drag City several years ago. Mayo Thompson is the creative force behind The Red Krayola.

Again, I present a song that you may not like, but I absolutely love. What would it hurt to give it a try, hmm?

Mayo Thompson – Worried, Worried

And here are some lyrics from the song that I really love, too.

The president and the police
In their golden fleece
They are looking for peace
Just like you or I might
But it’s in their own way
And it just ain’t the same
And it gives us all a terrible fright

Enjoy it (or don’t)!

Do Me In Once And I’ll Be Sad, Do Me In Twice and I’ll Know Better

Continuing my incredibly popular one song mixes, we visit a little noveltyish act of the late 1960’s — The GTO’s.

I first heard this song on an album my dad got for me.

I know, the song is somewhat tunelessly sung, and the lyrics are a little silly, but boy howdy, do I just love it to death. Love it.

Enjoy it (or don’t)!
